Community, Awareness, Respect
and Engagement Committee 2013
The C.A.R.E. Committee is short for the “Community Awareness, Respect and Engagement” Committee. This committee plans the events during Orientation that raise money for Shinerama, a national campaign raising awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. C.A.R.E. is dedicated to connecting Queen’s students with two communities, the university and the City of Kingston. C.A.R.E. works and plans to introduce students to the resources offered by both communities and coordinates events that showcase Queen’s spirit and build positive relationships with the city. Events like Tour of the Town, Sidewalk Sale, Shine Rally, Shine Day, Frosh Night In the Wild West and multiple fundraising initiatives through Care Out There help create bonds through community outreach activities. With the enthusiastic participation of first year students hopefully Queen’s University will raise over $60,000 for Shinerama in 2013! For more information regarding Shinerama please visit our website www.queensshinerama.com or check us out on Facebook and Twitter (@QueensShinerama)!
Hey there class of 2017! My name is Tessa Burnside and I am honoured to be the Community Awareness Respect and Engagement Chair (or otherwise known as C.A.R.E) for Orientation Week 2013! My fantastic committee of six lovely individuals is in charge of events during Arts and Science Orientation involved in introducing you to not only the Queen’s community, but also the Kingston community! Additionally throughout the week we fundraise for the charity Shinerama, geared towards raising funds and awareness of Cystic Fibrosis! Last year we managed to raise over $58,000.00, and this year our goal is $65,000.00, and you can all help with this goal! When not doing OWeek things, I am usually found in Theological Hall (the Drama building on campus), working at Clark Hall Pub (a local pub on campus) or watching ridiculously cute videos of animals. I am so utterly thrilled to be participating in Orientation week for the fourth time around, and am especially excited to meet all of you, class of 2017! Get stoked, because Orientation week both as a first year, as a Gael and as an OC were some of the greatest times I’ve had at Queen’s so far, and I CANNOT wait for you all to experience that! See you in September!!!
Hey guys! My name is Devon Hauth and I am a Stage and Screen student at Queen’s. I am on this year’s C.A.R.E. committee and I could not be more excited! Other than my obsession with Orientation Week, I love drama, dance and jumping in puddles. And let me tell you, Queen’s is just the place for all of these (there are some pretty great puddles when it rains) and that’s why I love this school; you can get involved in anything want and ALWAYS find a place where you fit in. This Orientation Week, I will be running Shine Rally with Matt, and Shine Day with Zoe (I’m a shiny person apparently). I feel so strongly about the Queen’s and Kingston community, as well as Shinerama, the charity that ASUS Orientation Week supports and I can’t wait to share all of these experiences with you!
Dear Class of 2017, Congratulations on getting accepted to Queen’s! We are SO excited to meet you this upcoming year! My name is Diandra Clohosey and I am a honoured to be a member of the amazing committee that plans your Orientation Week! It is our goal as the ASUS Orientation Committee 2013 to make you first week here the most fun, informative, and enjoyable. O-Week has always been a highlight of my experience here at Queen’s and I am currently a second year Life Sciences SSP student. As a member of the C.A.R.E team, I am planning “Sidewalk Sale” with the elegant Elyse and “Care out There” with the majestic Matthew! Here at Queen’s, I spend most of my time frolicking through the campus in addition to the beautiful city of Kingston. I am so proud to call Kingston and Queen’s my home, and I am so pumped that you will become a member of our community! If you see me through the week, I may be dancing up a storm or enlightening the world with my beautiful yet tone-deaf voice. I would love to meet you so please feel free to say “hi” or “nice dance moves” or just ask any question that you may have! Sincerely and with love, Diandra.
“Hi Class of 2017! My name is Zoe and I am so excited to be part of the Orientation Committee this year! I’m from Calgary, Alberta and enjoy watching TV shows like Glee and Grey’s Anatomy, learning the anatomy of the brain and eating copious amounts of candy. I’m a psychology major here and Queen’s and I can’t wait for you all to get here and experience this wonderful place I call home. This year, I am lucky enough to be working with the six other fabulous members of the C.A.R.E. committee. In particular, Quinn and I are planning Tour of the Town and I’m working with Devon on Shine Day! I cannot wait for you all to get here. If you see me during O-week or wandering around campus feel free to come introduce yourself! I would love to say hi in person. See you soon!”
Whaddup Class of 2017! I’m Quinn and I am a Life Sciences SSP student here at Queen’s. A little bit about myself, cause I know you’re all dying to know… I come from a small town called Grimsby (that’s okay, no one has ever heard of it). For any inspiring life scientists, I am a monozygotic twin (#quinningandtwinning) with a lot more different from my twin that just our fingerprints and epi-genomes. A typical week for me involves chilling with friends, jamming with my housemates on guitar and piano, eating a lot of pasta and nutella, and watching the walking dead every Sunday. That is probably the best show ever. Anyways, back to Orientation, I am SUPER EXCITED to plan this year’s Orientation Week! My two events I’m planning for you guys on the swan-tastic C.A.R.E. committee are Tour of the Town with the zealous Zoe and Frosh Night in the Wild West with the extraordinary Elyse! Orientation Week is such a unique and amazing experience and I cannot wait for you guys to endure all the amazing memories, great activities, and awesome new friends you’re going to meet! I look forwards to seeing all of your wonderful faces in September! If you see me swanning around throughout the week, feel free to say hi! See ya’ll soon, mad love, GET PUMPED!!!

Get excited to meet your incredible gaels, and make some memories of your own! This week flies by, so cherish every moment! AYYY CLASS OF 2017! I’m Matthew, a bio major (who’s also taken a lot of arts classes!) and I am SO PUMPED for O-WEEK 2013! I was born and raised here in ktown, and I’ve been loving my time here at Queen’s. I’m part of C.A.R.E., and my events are Care Out There with d-d-d-DIAAANDRA, and Shine Rally wit the D-Licious DEVON! I love popsicles of any kind, bacon, House music and… Pokémon. I had an insane amount of fun my first O-Week, and I’ve been coming back for more ever since. I’ve been involved in several different services/groups at Queen’s, and I really encourage you all to look into the AMS clubs and services! There are so many different groups on campus that it’s literally impossible that something won’t grab your attention during Orientation Week. Of course, if you see me on campus, introduce yourself! I never forget names or faces and I’m always d to chat Idk bout you but I can’t wait ‘til September!
